Magician Cotswolds: Wedding Magician and Close-Up Magic for Country Venues

Honey-coloured stone, a manor house hotel and a long lunch that turns into a long evening: that's a Cotswolds celebration. My name's David Willmott. I'm a close-up magician from Bristol, and I bring my magic to weddings, birthdays and company events right across the Cotswolds, from Cirencester and Tetbury up to Broadway and Chipping Norton.

I work face to face with small groups of your guests, using cards, coins and the odd thing borrowed from your guests, which they do get back. There's no stage show and no one gets made a fool of. Strangers end up laughing together, and the question "how did he do that?" usually lasts well past the cheese course.

Wedding magician in the Cotswolds

I was the wedding magician for former England goalkeeper David Seaman and Dancing on Ice's Frankie Poultney when they married at Dormy House, near Broadway. You don't need a famous guest list to get the same thing on your day. I've also performed at weddings at The Swan Hotel in Bibury and at The Manor House Hotel in Moreton-in-Marsh, where I kept the guests entertained through the drinks reception. Afterwards the couple told me their guests were "talking about you long into the evening".

As your wedding magician, I'm usually busiest during the drinks reception, the time when you vanish for photos in the gardens. I can also visit the tables at the wedding breakfast, or help evening guests settle in. You tell me what matters most and I fit around it.

Close-up and table magic

Close-up magic suits the Cotswolds well, because so many venues here are made up of smaller rooms, snugs, terraces and courtyards rather than one big hall. I go to where your guests are, so nobody misses out because they've found a comfy sofa. At a sit-down meal I become your table magician, giving each table a few minutes of magic between courses and stepping back as soon as the plates arrive.

Birthdays, anniversaries and company events

Not every Cotswolds booking is a wedding. I've performed at a birthday celebration at Wyck Hill House Hotel in Stow-on-the-Wold, a golden wedding party at Washbourne Court Hotel, an event at Barnsley House near Cirencester and a joint 70th, 80th and 90th birthday party in Cheltenham. Company dinners, client evenings and Christmas parties work just as well.

Do you charge extra for travel to the Cotswolds?

No. The southern Cotswolds are close to home, and I'm happy to drive further north to Stow, Moreton-in-Marsh and Broadway. The fee I quote is the whole price, so the drive never turns up later as a separate bill.

Our reception is outdoors. Will that work?

Yes. A marquee on the lawn, a courtyard or a sunny terrace all work, because close-up magic needs no stage and nothing to plug in. And if a Cotswolds shower sends everyone indoors, I simply follow them in.

Will the magic work for guests of all ages?

That's one of the best things about it. At the golden wedding party at Washbourne Court the guests ranged from small children to grandparents, and at the joint 70th, 80th and 90th birthday party in Cheltenham, the family told me I suited the magic to every age in the room. I adapt each set to the group in front of me, so your grandmother and your teenage nephew both get something they enjoy.

Will it work in a village hall or a pub function room?

Very well. Not every party is at a country house hotel. After a party I performed at in Cropthorne and Charlton Village Hall, near Evesham, the hosts said everyone was "talking about you all night". All I really need is your guests.

Can you entertain a large company event?

Yes. For a big conference dinner or staff party at a Cotswolds hotel, I can bring a few fellow magicians along to share the room, and between us every table gets its turn.

Some of our guests are well known. Will you be discreet?

Yes. I've performed for well-known guests before, and they get exactly what everyone else gets: good magic, a friendly face and no fuss. The focus stays on your guests and on your day.

Areas I cover in the Cotswolds

Cirencester, Tetbury, Stroud, Painswick, Cheltenham, Winchcombe, Broadway, Chipping Campden, Moreton-in-Marsh, Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water, the Slaughters, Northleach, Bibury, Burford, Chipping Norton, South Cerney and the villages in between. Bristol itself is my home patch, so for events in the city itself, my magician Bristol page is the one to read.
