Close-up magic happens inches from your guests, in small groups at a drinks reception or right at their tables. As a table magician in Essex, I introduce myself, perform a short set at each table, then move on to the next. If the next course arrives, the band starts, or it's time for speeches, I disappear for a few moments. That's one trick I'm very good at. Then I come back at the next break.

Parties and corporate events

Birthdays, anniversaries, house parties, Christmas parties, staff parties, launch parties and client dinners all work well. For a seated meal I perform table magic between courses. Sleight of hand, performed inches from their noses. A signed card might turn up frozen inside a block of ice or sealed in an envelope in my wallet, and there's a little mind reading too. My signature trick ends with a signed banknote changing currency and turning up inside a kiwi fruit, and that's usually the one people are still arguing about at breakfast.

What happens when you arrive on the day?

I arrive in good time, dressed to suit your event, and introduce myself to whoever is looking after things, whether that's you, the venue coordinator or the best man. Then I follow the plan we've agreed, so you can get on with enjoying your day. If the timings change, just tell me and I'll work around them.

Will the magic get in the way of the speeches or the meal?

No. I keep one eye on the room as well as the cards. When the food arrives, the speeches start or the band strikes up, I step away and come back at the next natural break. Your guests get the magic and still hear every word of the best man's speech, for better or worse.

Does close-up magic work for a small wedding or a dinner party?

Very well. Close-up magic is made for small groups, so at an intimate wedding or a dinner party at home everyone gets a front-row seat and a turn at holding the cards. It's also a lovely way to get two families talking when they've only just met.

I'm not keen on being the centre of attention. Will I be picked on?

Not at all. I never single anyone out to look silly, and the joke is never on the guest. People who want to join in can shuffle the cards, and people who'd rather watch just get a very good view.
